5 steps to make sure your company is diverse and inclusive
5 steps to make sure your company is diverse and inclusiveDiversity and inclusivity are major buzz words these days, but for good reason. Culturally, it means embracing differences and understanding that life experience is shared, but varied. Professionally, a diverse employee base can help your organization stay agile and productive, rather than stagnate with the saatkorn old ideas and viewpoints.Lets look at five steps you can take to enrich your diversity hiring initiatives.1. Reconsider what diversity and inclusivity mean to your organization. We all know the textbook definition of diversity pretty well by nowpeople from a broad range of cultural, gender, or religious backgrounds. But if youre looking to truly up your diversity factor, its time to broaden that definition and think about what it means for your company. Consider other types of diversity different educational backgrounds, different experience levels, different physical abilities, etc. Hiring for diversity and inclusi vity may not mean much in the long run if you end up hiring people who technically tick the diversity box because they are in particular racial or ethnic groups, but are in the same educational or experience mold as everyone else in the company. Think about how you can really diversify the perspectives and skill sets in your employee pool.2. Use a committee approach. How do you get more diverse voices in your organization? Start by allowing more diverse voices to help make the decisions. Opening up the process to a committee, instead of putting it all on one person or department, can really help enhance your diversity strategy. If you include team members from various departments or parts of the company, youre also adding a level of perspective diversity as well. Your committee may also bring fresh ideas about where to look for different kinds of talent, helping you move outside the standard job ad.3. Commit to the process. Its one thing to say, yeah, its our strategy to hire for dive rsity, but its another to carve out the time and resources to do that, given that both are at such a premium. If youre prioritizing diverse and inclusive hiring, you need to commit extra time to seek out alternative hiring and marketing methods to recruit that diverse talent. This may mean stepping outside your comfort zone to place ads or do outreach to non-mainstream job boards or resources.

Researchers Just Found A Link Between Womens Money and Career Goals, And Its Pretty Grim
Researchers Just Found A Link Between Womens Money and Career Goals, And Its Pretty Grim Different individuals and employers determine the definition of financial wellness in a variety of ways. In an effort to account for those discrepancies, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch recently released a study of financial wellness as a general concept and how employer-sponsored programs factor into employee evaluations of their own status. In the report of their findings, BoA/Merrill Lynch did demographic-specific evaluations in an effort to ascertain how different groups think about their financial present and future. According to their findings, women feel less financially well overall than men, with 47% claiming that they feel less established with money than theyd like (the number for men in this standort is 29%).BoA/Merrill Lynch also discovered that employees who feel insecure about their financial stability distribution policy their primary focus on short-term goals, while those who feel c omfortable with their fiscal situation hone in on long-term goals. And while the study doesnt make specific correlations between the fact that less financially healthy participants have goals that are more immediate and the amount of women who identify as less financially healthy, its hard to ignore. What can these findings teach us about the self-evaluations of women in the workplace in 2018?Women feel less secure about their financial health than men, so they may not feel equally empowered to place their attention on long-term pursuits. The BoA/Merrill Lynch study presented a major link between self-perceived financial security and the tendency to invest time and energy toward setting and fulfilling long-term goals. For example, 39% of employees who feel financially well consider good savings habits a crucial goal, while only 30% of less-secure employees feel the same way. On the flip side, 30% of less-secure employees count paying regular bills and day-to-day expenses among their b iggest financial concerns, as opposed to only 18% of financially-well employees.Because more women than men count themselves among the group that doesnt feel financially well, it begs the question Do women as a whole feel less comfortable focusing on long-term goals than their male counterparts? Its not an outlandish conclusion. Those who need to direct their attention to daily concerns and short-term financial conditions dont have the luxury of putting time and money toward big-picture aspirations. If, as the study suggests, fewer women see themselves in a position to focus on macro goals, it could have larger implications for the way that many women in the workplace view their career trajectories. The income inequalities between men and women connect to the imbalance in perceived financial security.According to the BofA/Merrill Lynch report, men in 2018 possess an average of $196,000 in investable assets, while the average for women only stands at $119,000. According to the Institu te for Womens Policy Research, women and men wont receive equal pay until at least 2015. And because income inequality still exists between the genders, men as a whole have the ability to set aside a larger nest egg for themselves, which contributes to their greater sense of financial stability. With a larger percentage of women feeling uncertain about their economic status due to income inequalities, long-term goals can easily be left on the back burner. This can hinder career growth and the economy at large. One way to fix the issue? Focus on pay equality and make women feel more confident in their economic standing.

Make 2015 the Year Your Company Fails Better
Make 2015 the Year Your Company Fails BetterMake 2015 the Year Your Company Fails BetterMake 2015 the Year Your Company Fails Better Sastry and Kara Penn, authors of FAIL BETTER Design Smart Mistakes and Succeed Sooner(HBR Press, 2014)No matter how forward-looking or agile companies aim to be, workplaces dont look on failure kindly. Yet anyone who wants to innovate knows that theres a risk that things wont go as planned.Heres the silver lining when things go off track this can be a good thing, if youre prepared to harness the benefits. Managers, teams and companies can plan for, and even craft, a better kind of failure. In our book, Fail Better, we explain how to enable small-scale and affordable failures that are linked to broader goals and designed to reveal key insights quickly. The six tips below will help make failure work for you.Elevate the humble project. No need to wait for a eureka flash of brilliance or a fall-from-the sky insight. You can use your current work as your sandb ox for experimentation.Think about every effort to create a novel product, result, or service as a project. Your projects are the vehicle for innovation and progress. In the end, only if projects succeed will you, your team, and your company do well in a changing market.Cultivate a mindset that sees projects as crucibles for improvement, learning, and new ideas, and you can design smart mistakes into your everyday work.Know your limits. Along with your personal tolerance for mistakes, its important to know within your company whats riding on the success of your project.By doing this, youll know how much messing up your project can afford and to assess how much your client, boss, or organization values insights gleaned through failure.Look at all three arenas at the outset of your next project to define the boundaries for your own trial-and-error experiments, and determine if you need to win over others to support your approach.Map out the thinking behind your project plan to genera te productive surprises. Yes, you need to do work planning, but were talking about going further. Start by identifying the problem youre trying to solve, the outcomes you desire, and the actions you think will get you there.Make the linkages between cause and effect a little mora explicit, so that when your teamencounters something unexpected while carrying out the project, you can pounce on it, figure out what it might mean, and adjust next steps as a result.Scale back on grandiose one-shot efforts. Iterate instead. Plan your work in repeatable chunks that you can try out early and then revamp, iterate, and improve upon everything.Nothing beats a real-world test Prioritize actions that will yield the most useful information first the type of information which challenges a core assumption, tests a prominent concept, or represents a proposed solution to the problem at hand.Kayak.com is a great example of this practice. The website presents two versions of their home page every week , determining which version performed better the information is then used to design the next round. If you have scope to try again, making tweaks along the way, youll be more open to finding opportunities for improvement.Be kind but discerning. No one is born with an ability to talk about failure in the moment. Talking about failures in a professionally appropriate way may take practice.Focus on demonstrating compassion, both to yourself and others, in the face of disappointing results, enabling team members to both learn and perform, and communicating with honesty and without shaming.Even if you aim to tolerate and embrace failures, not every mistake is beneficial. Failures arising from lack of attention, insufficient effort, or disregard for the data must be weeded out from the rest, otherwise you run the risk of encouraging poor performance.Figure out three things to take away from every project (and share them). Its easy at the end of a project to rush on to the next thing, but the seeds of future failures are often sown in this critical wrap-up moment.Carve out time to extract and share actionable lessons. It need not be complicated. Try just three steps to help identify and documentOne thing you did you should not do again in future projectsOne new thing you tried that is worth doing againSomething new you learned about the world that others in your company could use to inform and improve their work.If every employee committed to this single activity, imagine the resulting cumulative learningMany a corporate hero tells a story of failures that paved the way to eventual success. Inspiring as they are, such stories dont tell you how to actually create the conditions for and capture the benefits of productive failures. These six tips will equip you to begin failing better. The best part? You dont need anyones permission or even any extra investment just the sandbox of your own work and the practical methods weve outlined here.Start today and make 2015 the year in which you, your team, and your company fail better. We then invite you to share your insights by visiting our website at FailBetterbyDesign.comAuthor BiosAnjali Sastry is senior lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management and lecturer in the department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Product Planning A Key to Entrepreneurial Success
Product Planning A Key to Entrepreneurial Success Product Planning A Key to Entrepreneurial Success Entrepreneurs strike out on their own for many reasons. Some are realizing their dream of independence at a time in their life where social and/or financial circumstances allow. Others may join the start-up ranks because they are frustrated with their current work situation. In either case, entrepreneurs typically bring to the table what they believe to be a killer product or application and one that will enable them to reap the emotional and financial rewards of commercial success. So Why Do So Many Fail?Entrepreneurs are typically resource-limited and cash-strapped, causing them to cut important corners in product planning and development. While they may be truly gifted product designers, most dont understand or possess the business savvy that will translate their idea into commercial success. fruchtwein importantly, many times entrepreneurs, driven by pride or ego, dont know when to pull the plug on a product idea. Even armed with undeniable facts, they feel like they can overcome the obvious negative factors and succeed against all odds. How can they avoid this trap? Long before the engineers open up their favorite design tool, they need to develop a product-planning strategy. Comprehensive product planning is essentialit encompasses market analysis and justification, competitive product analysis, pricing analysis, manufacturability, and ROI. With a thorough and objective analysis in these critical areas, the entrepreneur can develop a value proposition for the new product and decide early on whether the product has a commercial future. If the stars are aligned, then that information will be the crux of the business plan that will gain the attention of investors. If the data just doesnt add up, then they have the information needed to step back and make a no-go decision before a lot of money is poured into a loser.Lets take a closer look at some of the product- planning essentials.Market Analysis and JustificationWhat problem does the product solve and how big is the problem? Here, entrepreneurs need to gather information about the potential users of the product and size of the potential market. Does the product replace an existing solution or is it a new way to solve an existing problem? What are the trends in the market? All of these factors need to be carefully analyzed before proceeding to product development.Competitive Product AnalysisIf there truly is a perceived need for the product in identified markets, the next step is to develop a competitive product analysis that will provide the data necessary to pinpoint competitive absatzwirtschaft positioning and create a value proposition for the product. Here, its necessary to drill down into competitive product specifications and compare them to the new product, identify key points of differentiation, and analyze the value of the competitive points to the user.Pricing AnalysisThe next s tep is to understand the value to the end users of the new or differentiated competitive product features. How much will they be willing to pay for these perceived benefits? What price will the market bear? Can a definitive ROI be quantitated for the end user?Manufacturing AnalysisAt this stage, the entrepreneur has established the market need, perceived value, and market price for the product. Now it is critical to determine how much it will cost to design, manufacture, and distribute the product can the product be manufactured and sold at the anticipated market price for the expected profit? And at what quantities?Making the Go/No-Go DecisionBy now, the entrepreneur has the information necessary to determine whether the product can be a viable commercial success. And if the answer is yes, a firm value proposition is in hand, which will be the foundation for a strong business strategy and execution plan. If value proposition is weak, than the entrepreneur can stop the effort and sa ve a lot of money and agony moving forward before any further investment in resources, materials, and time are made. While there are many more factors to address in launching a commercially successful product, initial and comprehensive product planning is critical to success.Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications.Comprehensive product planning is essentialit encompasses market analysis and justification, competitive product analysis, pricing analysis, manufacturability, and ROI.

How your partners career suffers when you receive rude emails
How yur lebensgefhrtes career suffers when you receive rude emailsHow your partners career suffers when you receive rude emailsGetting a rude email at work is not just going to ruin your day - its also going to ruin your partners day later. These are long-lasting effects of email incivility that a recent study published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior explored. The researchers found that employees who are the victims of frequent email incivility - which they broadly define as rude messages, time-sensitive messages sent with inadequate notice, and ignored requests made via email - carry that bad energy with them to their home. They transmit the stress over that rude email to their partners in their downtime and it causes both partners to withdraw from work the following week.Rude emails hurt your partners work behaviorPartners can pick up what kind of mood we are in when we get home from work. Using online survey data from 167 dual-earner couples on how they handled stress at home and at work, the researchers found that we can infect our partners with our work stress, which in turn causes both partners to withdraw from work.Withdrawing from work is a coping mechanism to draining effects of stress. We avoid work because we have to preserve our energy. Not only did employees with rude emails disengage from work, the stress crossover effect also caused their partners to withdraw from work too. These disengaged partners took longer lunch breaks, took more bathroom breaks than allowed, and said they put less effort than they should have at their jobs.Employees ability to let bad work days go also influenced how they interacted with their partners. Employees passed greater stress onto their partner if they ruminated more about their bad work week than employees who had less negative work reflection. Why rude emails stingWe already know that we are sensitive to rude behavior. We are not immune even if we are not the ones being insulted. Just witnessing someo nes rude behavior is enough to ruin our mood for the rest of the day as if we had been the recipient of it ourselves. You may think that one brusque demand is just words but it causes a spillover effect into your work and home life.Online rudeness hurts because it is harder for us to see the source. Because virtual tone is hard to read, a rude email is frustratingly ambiguous. Did he really mean to ignore me? Why was my work not hyperlinked?Sense-making attempts may make incivility episodes more salient in the minds of incivility recipients and continue to create frustrations, thereby draining them, the researchers said about why emailed rudeness particularly stings. To avoid someone elses rudeness from derailing our day and careers, employers need to role model good email etiquette and establish codes of conduct for how we should talk to each other online, researchers recommend. They should also pay particular attention to remote employees who may be the more likely victims of email incivility. And for employees who get the brunt of a rude remark? Try establishing an end-of-day routine, so that you can learn to stop dwelling in the past and you can be fully present for your partners by the time you open your homes door.

7 summer superfoods to snack on this summer
7 summer superfoods to snack on this summer7 summer superfoods to snack on this summerWhen the clock strikes 2 p.m., and you still have a few hours left until its time to hitch a ride home, do you struggle to muster up the energy to push through the afternoon? Perhaps you try going for a walk around the block or blow off some steam on Instagram. Maybe you do a mini-stretch at your desk or even make a visit to the nearby coffee shop. While all of behauptung tactics technically could jolt some energy, the best way to strategize your focus and productivity is via your tummy. After all, proper nutrition doesnt just do wonders for your overall health, but its a huge contributor to your brain function. During the hottest season of the years, certain wonders from Mother Nature offer the right nutrients to spark creativity and supercharge your attention span. By implementing these superfoods in your breakfasts, lunches or snacks, youll set yourself up for a full working day of success.Blueber riesRachel Daniels, MS, RD, the senior director of nutrition for Virtual Health Partners say these blue powerhouses are low in calories, but high in benefits. Featuring vitamin C and K, fiber, and antioxidants, you can recover faster from any inflammation you experience. (Like after a summer rooftop rager, maybe?). There are some studies that have shown that blueberries can help promote lasting brain health, memory and focus. Have a cup of blueberries on their own, mix some with a small plain yogurt, or freeze your berries before you bring them to the beach for a cool-down snack, Daniels suggests.Ground flaxseedMonica Auslander Moreno, MS, RD, LD/N, a nutrition consultant for RSP Nutrition says these tiny nibbles can do wonders for your tummy woes in the summer. Since many people are guilty of overindulging in not-so-great-foods when the sun hangs out longer, incorporates some of these plant-based, omega 3 fatty acids into your diet is smart. They contain tons of iron, and they help alleviate constipation when it strikes. You can sprinkle them into your oatmeal, smoothie or yogurt for easy snacking.TomatoesHead to the produce section of your local grocery store and youll find a plethora of tomatoes in the summer, available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. During the sticky, thermisch days of summer, Daniels says these fruits are at their peak ripeness, making them a superfood of the season. Whats most notable about these beauties is their high lycopene content. This antioxidant has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, and improved skin health.Daniels also notes they are low in calories and carbs, but drenched with water, so they offer that much-needed quench when its hot outside. Keep your hydration, energy, and overall health in check this summer by snacking on some tomatoes, she continues. Smaller varieties, like cherry tomatoes, make a great snack. Mix a bunch of varieties into a salad or Caprese platter, chop them up for some bruschetta, or dry them in the oven to make tomato chips with herbs and spices. FishConsidering theres nothing quite like a freshly-caught filet on a hot summer day, its probably not difficult to convince you to eat mora fish. However, if you need some extra fodder to justify the often high-price tag of this protein choice, consider the major benefits of the sea. As Dr. Robert Graham, MD, MPH, the founder of FRESH Med NYC and a Functional Medicine Specialist for Physio Logic Integrative explains, the omega-3 fatty acid component of fish makes them a key for brain health. This is especially true for specific types, like salmon, mackerel and sardines. A diet with higher levels of these fats have been linked to slower mental decline and may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we age. For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly, he recommends.LegumesSurprisingly, Moreno says most people dont eat beans daily, even though its recommended. How come? She explains this plant-based form of protein contains vitamin B and prebiotic fiber, which nourish probiotic organisms within our guts. Theyre quite filling and are a perfect starch component of a meal, as opposed to, say, rice, which one can easily eat several cups of. Instead, try eating several cups of beans and youll notice a change she adds.AvocadosPacked with the right kind of fats and tons of nutrients that improve brain health, concentration and memory, Dr. Graham says Instagrams favorite veggie meme is actually a superfood. Avocados are 75 percent monounsaturated fats, which is the healthy fat found in olive oil. Monounsaturated fats aid in the production of acetylcholine which is the chemical in the brain responsible for memory and learning, he notes. So when in doubt? Some smash avo isnt so bad after allBell peppersIn general, Daniels think bell peppers are an often-underrated food - not only in health benefits but in taste. During the summer, theyre at their prime, offeri ng a high vitamin C content and other perks, like assisting with iron absorption and preventing anemia. If you are worried about your eye health, you might want to double-up on this veggie since it contains carotenoids that contribute to eye health, Daniels adds.Slice up bell peppers or purchase mini peppers for a good crunchy snack. You can dip them in your favorite dip, like hummus or tzatziki, grill them, or use them as a pepper boat for a bread- or cracker-like effect with tuna or chicken salad, she suggests.
